Pastor's Corner
Dear People of God,
The New Year is moving rather fast; already this weekend we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord. He is already an adult. This closes the curtain on the Christmas season enshrined in the infancy narrative with the visit of the Magi - celebration of Epiphany (theophany - God's self revelation).
The ministerial life of Jesus Christ begins with the Baptism narrative. The gospel of Mark is rather very brief on this episode unlike Matthew and Luke. Jesus is no longer the Jesus in the manger to be visited, but he is at the Jordan. He is no more the child who can't fend for himself, but the adult Jesus with a mission/vision. He is now baptized in the Jordan and a voice from heaven proclaimed "You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased". God has ordained and consecrated Jesus with a visible sign as the minister par excellence.
John the Baptist is unworthy to untie the strap of his sandals and he, John, baptizes with water. "The one coming after him will baptize with the Holy Spirit", John exclaimed. God has confirmed and conferred this mission on Jesus at his baptism. What else do we need to see and know that God indeed is our savior. He truly is and we are blessed with the gift of Jesus in our lives; and that he gives us the Spirit of truth.
